On the other hand, in the indexed-rate tariff, the price varies according to the wholesale market, which can result in either an increase or a decrease in prices, depending on market fluctuations.

The main difference between the fixed and variable tariff lies in their flexibility. The fixed tariff guarantees a constant price over time, while the variable tariff adjusts its price according to market fluctuations. Therefore, depending on whether you prefer a stable bill or are willing to accept some uncertainty, you can choose between these two tariffs.

To calculate the electricity budget for your company, you need:

From January 1 to December 31, 2024, a 10% VAT will be applied on electricity bills in the following cases:

  • If you have a contract with power up to 10 kW, and the average price last month exceeded €45/MWh.
  • If you are a beneficiary of the social bonus.

For all other contracts, the standard 21% VAT will apply to electricity. That is, if you are a company with contracted power below 10 kW, the 10% VAT will apply; if your contracted power is higher, the 21% VAT will be applied.

This change is established in Article 21 of Royal Decree-Law 8/2023, dated December 27.
