indexed electricity rate

What is an indexed electricity rate?

With the Indexed Electricity Rate, consumers pay for energy at the wholesale market cost price, plus a small management fee.

Consumers with a contracted power of less than 15 kW have three consumption periods with variable prices. It is advisable to concentrate usage during the Valley Period, which is the most economical. See the tariff periods here.

Benefits of the indexed electricity rate

It stands out for its ability to generate savings compared to fixed rates, thanks to the possibility of optimizing consumption by concentrating it during the most economical hours.

  • You pay for electricity according to its actual cost in the wholesale market.

  • You can adjust your consumption to the cheapest hours of the day.

  • You avoid the risk premium of fixed rates.

  • Benefit immediately if the electricity price drops.

Components
of the indexed electricity rate

  • Power term: The cost for power is fixed and depends on the number of kW contracted, which determines how many devices you can use simultaneously. The higher the power, the higher the monthly cost.
  • Energy term: The energy price is calculated based on consumption and the hourly cost, plus a management fee, eliminating the risk premium found in fixed rates.

Frequently asked questions about indexed electricity rates for your home

(1) INDEXED PRICE:
The monthly amount for the energy term price will be calculated on an hourly basis. The hourly price, calculated according to the following formula, will be multiplied by the customer’s hourly consumption at the grid connection point, based on the hourly profile established in the General Contract Conditions. Additionally, a Financial Cost of 1.1% will be applied on all contract components, including VAT or IGIC.

PEh = [(OMIEh + COSh + PCh + CD) × (1 + PRh(%)) + GO] × 1.015 + TA

PEh = Hourly energy price
OMIEh = Daily market price (OMIE)
COSh = System operator cost (REE) + Remuneration for System Operator and Market Operator + Energy Efficiency Fund + Commercialization charges
PCh = Capacity payments
CD = Imbalance costs
PRh(%) = Losses in the Transport and Distribution Networks, according to current legislation at any given time
GO = Operating expenses (c€/kWh)
TA = Energy term of the Access tariffs, according to current legislation at any given time.

*In SEIE, according to the hourly SEIE price for retailers (except CUR).
**A correction will be applied to the system operator costs to adjust deviations between provisional values calculated by REE and the actual values of €4/MWh for low and high voltage in mainland supplies. For island supplies, these will increase by €2/MWh over the value applied in mainland supplies. Additionally, a correction of 3% in low voltage tariffs and 2% in high voltage tariffs will be applied to the price of supplied energy to adjust deviations between provisional network losses calculated by REE and actual losses.
***Commercialization charges: €0.0019/kWh for tariffs 2.0TD with contracted power over <10kW, €0.0007/kWh for tariffs 2.0TD with contracted power under 10kW.

The indexed electricity rate is a variable tariff where the cost of electricity is linked to the wholesale market price, resulting in monthly variations in the rates.

The indexed electricity rate varies month to month as it depends on the price set by the wholesale electricity market. This fluctuation can lead to savings in months when energy costs decrease, but it also carries the risk of facing increases when prices go up.

Choosing between an indexed or fixed electricity rate doesn’t have to be complicated. You just need to consider the needs of each individual or household. The benefits of a fixed rate are that it provides the stability of knowing what your monthly bill will be. On the other hand, the indexed rate offers the advantage of potential savings when the market price drops, but also carries the possibility of cost increases in some months.

No matter what your decision is, at ADX Energía we will support you in choosing the rate, during the switch of supplier, and throughout your entire contract with top-quality customer service.

Is the indexed electricity rate right for me?

To know if the indexed rate is suitable for you, you need to consider the following:

The price of electricity in the indexed rate varies every hour and every day, and it is not known in advance. However, we can know the most expensive and cheapest hours for the following day, so if you have the possibility to monitor and shift your energy consumption to cheaper hours and days (for example, running the washing machine, dishwasher, or cooking at a different time), this rate could suit you. Likewise, it is important to consider possible increases in energy prices and whether they would be manageable for you.
